The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has pushed back the launch of its presidential campaign council by almost a week.

The new date

The council was due to be inaugurated on Tuesday 20 October 2026. In a statement on Monday, the party’s national publicity secretary, Osa Director, said it would now hold on Monday 26 October because of the “very tight schedule” of the presidential candidate, Peter Obi, “who has a very important engagement overseas.” The party apologised for the inconvenience and urged supporters to stay focused, signing off with its slogan, “A New Nigeria is Possible!”

The statement did not name a venue or the council’s leaders. The party’s national chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, and vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso have been consulting on appointments; in September the NDC gave Obi and Kwankwaso the power to pick campaign officials.

Where the race stands

By the time the NDC council is inaugurated, President Tinubu’s campaign will already have held its flag-off in Kaduna on 24 October, and the ADC has inaugurated its own council for Atiku Abubakar. The NDC is also dealing with defections: this week it accused the APC of bribing some of its candidates to switch parties.
