Peter Obi is a businessman and former two-term governor of Anambra State. His 2023 campaign on the Labour Party platform, driven by a young and largely online movement whose members call themselves “Obidients”, won more than six million votes and carried Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory. In 2027 he is the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate.12
Early life and education
Obi was born in Onitsha on 19 July 1961 into a Catholic family from Agulu. He attended Christ the King College, Onitsha, and studied philosophy at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, graduating in 1984. He later took executive courses at the Lagos Business School, IMD in Switzerland, Harvard Business School, Oxford’s Saïd Business School, Cambridge Judge Business School and the Kellogg School of Management.1
Business career
Before politics, Obi was a trader and banker. He held director and chairman positions in several companies and banks.1 The 2021 Pandora Papers investigation, reported in Nigeria by Premium Times and partners, said he had kept interests in offshore companies, including Next International (UK), while governor, and had not declared them. Obi said the companies were legitimate family businesses, that he had resigned his positions before taking office and that he broke no law. The EFCC invited him for questioning.34
Governor of Anambra State
Obi ran for governor in 2003 on the APGA platform. Chris Ngige of the PDP was declared the winner, but after nearly three years of litigation the Court of Appeal declared Obi the rightful winner, and he took office on 17 March 2006. In November 2006 the State House of Assembly impeached him; the courts reversed the impeachment and restored him in 2007. He was removed again briefly after the April 2007 election, until the Supreme Court ruled that his four-year term had to run from 2006. He was re-elected in 2010 and left office in March 2014.1
His supporters praise his frugality and say he left the state significant savings and investments. His successor’s camp later disputed that account, saying he also left debts; the figures remain a subject of political argument.56 His government returned many schools to the missions that had founded them and invested in education and health, which earned him awards including ThisDay’s “Most Prudent Governor”.1
National politics
Obi joined the PDP in 2014. President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and in 2019 he was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.1
The 2023 campaign
He declared for the PDP presidential ticket in March 2022 but left the party in May 2022, complaining of vote buying in the primaries, and joined the Labour Party, with Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as running mate. He came third with 6,101,533 votes, winning Lagos, the FCT and the South-East. He rejected the result, but the tribunal and, on 26 October 2023, the Supreme Court dismissed his petition.17
In April 2023 an online newspaper published an audio recording of a call in which Obi was alleged to have described the election as a “religious war”. He said the recording was fake.1
The NDC and the 2027 ticket
On 31 December 2025 Obi announced that he was joining the ADC coalition. On 2 May 2026 he left it rather than contest against Atiku Abubakar, and on 30 May 2026 the National Democratic Congress presented him as its presidential candidate, with Rabiu Kwankwaso as running mate.12 Kwankwaso has said Obi signed an agreement to serve a single term.8
Personal life
Obi married Margaret Brownson Usen in 1992, and they have two children. A devout Catholic, he was made a papal knight in 2014.1
