After tribunals nullified several 2015 National Assembly and state assembly elections in Rivers State, INEC held rerun elections in 2016. The December rerun was marred by gunmen attacking voters and collation centres; several people were killed. A deputy superintendent of police and his orderly were murdered, and a suspect later told police they had been beheaded.

INEC suspended collation in some areas, and the results of several constituencies were withheld.
