Peter Mbah is the Governor of Enugu State. A lawyer and oil-and-gas businessman who served as a commissioner in the early 2000s, he won a closely fought election in 2023 and moved from the PDP to the APC in October 2025.12

Early life and career

Mbah was born in Enugu on 17 March 1972 and comes from Owo in Nkanu East. He studied law in London and Lagos and took an MBA at IESE in Spain. He founded several businesses, including Pinnacle Oil and Gas, which built fuel import and storage facilities in the Lekki Free Trade Zone. Under Governor Chimaroke Nnamani he was Chief of Staff and then Commissioner for Finance.1

The 2023 election

Mbah won the PDP primary in May 2022 and the March 2023 election against Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party. Edeoga challenged the result, arguing among other things that Mbah’s NYSC discharge certificate was forged after the NYSC said it had not issued it. A Federal High Court later declared the certificate genuine and fined the NYSC, and the tribunal, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upheld Mbah’s election.34

Governor (2023–present)

Mbah promised to grow Enugu’s economy sharply, and his government points to new schools and primary health centres, water supply projects and roads; UNICEF praised the state’s spending on education and health.5 Opposition figures have questioned the state’s borrowing and accused the government of favouring visible projects in the capital.6

Move to the APC

On 14 October 2025 Mbah announced that he had joined the APC, saying the move was about connecting Enugu with the federal government.2

Personal life

Mbah is married to Nkechinyere Mbah, and they have four children.1
