In the first round on 22 September 2018, the PDP’s Ademola Adeleke led the APC’s Gboyega Oyetola by 353 votes. Because the votes cancelled in seven polling units were more than the margin, INEC declared the election inconclusive and held a rerun on 27 September.

Observers reported intimidation of voters and journalists during the rerun. Oyetola won, and his victory was eventually upheld by the Supreme Court in 2019.
